Public Speaking

Sacrament Meeting Talk

Ordinarily I have few problems with public speaking. I wouldn't say I love it, because it can be rather stressful but it's usually not a huge deal to me. It does take lots of time and research and thought.

Well, the evening I came home from Womens Conference my husband and I got a call to give talks at the end of the month. That is next Sunday. After coping with the misery of passing a kidney stone and then traveling back home after a busy trip I retired to bed early only to have Laren asking me if it was okay if we gave talks on the 27th. I told him I didn't know for sure to give me a day to think about it and rest and then we could let him know.

So on the very next evening I had forgotten all about the previous nights phone call and the phone rang again. I answered and it was Brother Bracey wanting to know if we would give the talks. I asked him again about the topics.

Well for Laren it was anything he wants to say about the Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley, our prophet. For me, he wants me to pick 2 or 3 talks from the most recent General Conference and tell how to give a Family Home Evening centered around those talks.

I said I would and we hung up the phone. After mulling this over and over I'm still trying to figure out how to approach this subject and what material to share. I've been reading and listening to the conference talks again in hopes of gaining some insights. For whatever reason it is not coming to me.

So, does anyone else have any good ideas for me. If you were listening to a talk on this subject what would you want to know?

Elder Scott gave an awesome talk on prayer in the morning session. Prayer is always a great topic to discuss for FHE. I am not sure if there were others who gave their talks on prayer, but hopefully that is a start for you. Good luck! Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better after such a rough week!

Um...divorce by Elder Oaks? Kidding. Can you imagine for FHE????

There are so many. I like the Jenny's idea with prayer. Good luck!

Last conference was so great...you'll have a hard time limiting it to just 2 or 3 talks! :)

What about picking two or three unrelated talks, and then taking a short quote from each one, talking about the quotes for FHE, and then posting the quotes on the fridge?

I really love the idea of having a word theme for the month - like the word "forgiveness" and then you use that word for all of the FHEs that month?!

Good luck, you'll do a great job!

I don't know which talk/theme I'd pick, but I'd love ideas on how to adapt a conference talk/Ensign article for younger children to keep them interested.

Hey, we just talked about your "talk" topic last night in FHE, lol.

My dh wants us to each choose a talk from the May Ensign and share it in FHE. We'll each take turns doing this for the next 6 mo. I'm not sure HOW, but I figure we'll just read it ahead of time and share it with each other and discuss it--which is fine if you have older kids like I do.

But it seems that you can usually find a similar topic to a conference talk in the Friend too.

So maybe you could focus your talk on WHY it's important to share those talks in FHE. Afterall--Conference talks are what the Lord wants us to hear NOW, for us, right now! How lucky are we as members of the church to have a living prophet and apostles to teach us and guide us.

I have always found it interesting that if you go back 10 years and look at old Conference talks--how many of the things they talked about then (evil and such) have become a big problem in the world today. It really shows that the Lord is guiding and directing what they speak about.
